Understanding what hair transplantation mean

Hair transplantation is a surgical operating procedure that helps to take off hair follicles from one part of the body known as donor site to the balding part of the body which is known as   recipient site. It basically involves transplanting of hair from one part of the body to that part where you have excessive hair loss. This method can also be used for restoring eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, and pubic hair. Moreover it also helps in filling up scars caused due to severe accidents.

As hair grows normally in groups of 1 to 4 hairs. Currently used methods of harvesting and transplanting of hair follicular units are done in their natural way of grouping. Thus, this modern technique of hair transplantation leads to a natural appearance by imitating the original process of hair orientation. This process of transplanting is known as follicular unit transplantation (FUT).

Donor hair harvesting

There are two different ways of hair harvesting:

  • Strip harvesting

Also known as follicular unit transplantation (fut), it is the most frequent method used for removing hair and follicles from a donor site. In this method surgeon harvests a strip of skin dorsal scalp, in an area of good hair growth. Each strip is of about 1–1.5 x 15–30 cm in size. When they close the resulting wound, assistants starts with the dismembering of individual follicular unit graft. These grafts are tiny and forms grouping of hair follicles. Using stereo-microscopes, will help in removing heavy amount of fibrous and fatty tissue.

Strip harvesting will leave a thin scar on scalp which will be latterly covered with patient’s hair. The recovery period after the harvesting method is about two weeks and which will require the staples to be removed by some medical personnel.

  • Follicular unit extraction (fue).

In this technique of harvesting, individual follicular units containing 1 to 4 hairs are removed under local anesthesia, this micro removal traditionally involves tiny punches of between 0.6mm and 1.0mm in diameter. Surgeons then uses tiny micro blades or fine needles to puncture the sites to receive the grafts, placing them in a fixed volume and form. After that, giving angel to the wound in a constant way to highlight the real view of hair pattern. And the final part of the procedure, inserting the individual grafts in place.

This method of hair transplanting is very time consuming than strip harvesting method. Whereas, the time limit is totally depend upon the experience of the surgeon.
